What About the Wind?

It’s true—North Kohala can be breezier than Kona because we’re not as sheltered by the tall volcanoes. While wind can occasionally impact surface conditions, it’s not an everyday issue.

In fact, the same trade winds that bring occasional chop help keep our water crystal clear , often providing excellent visibility that rivals anywhere on the Big Island. This happens because the wind pushes plankton and sediment in the water column offshore, clearing out the water and giving us 100+ feet of visibility most of the year.

Hawaii's Big Island is renowned for its stunning landscapes, both above and below the water's surface. While scuba divers flock to the island for its colorful reefs and marine life, there's another hidden gem waiting to be explored – lava tubes. In this blog post, we'll take you on a journey beneath the surface to discover how lava tubes are formed, offer tips for diving safely in them, and introduce you to some of the fascinating creatures that call these volcanic passageways home. Plus, we can't discuss lava tubes without mentioning Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of volcanoes and fire.

How Are Lava Tubes Formed?

Lava tubes are geological formations that originate from volcanic activity. Here's how they're created:

Volcanic Eruption: Hawaii was formed through millions of years of volcanic activity, as lava erupted from underwater vents and built up layer upon layer, eventually creating a chain of islands. The Big Island is home to 4 active volcanoes, including 2 that have erupted recently, Mauna Loa and Kilauea, adding new land to our island.

Surface Cooling: As the lava flows, it cools and solidifies on the surface, forming a protective crust. Meanwhile, the molten lava beneath continues to flow.

Tunnel Formation: Over time, the inner lava remains hot and molten while the outer layer cools and hardens, creating a tunnel or tube. When the eruption subsides, these tunnels are left behind.

Lava Tube Growth: Lava tubes can range from a few feet to several miles in length, depending on the volume of lava that once flowed through them.

Tips for Diving in Lava Tubes

Diving in lava tubes can be an exhilarating experience, but it's essential to prioritize safety. Keep in mind that we will only ever take you into a lava tube that is considered a cavern, NOT a cave. The difference between the two is that you can always see an exit in a cavern, and there is generally lots of ambient light coming in the cavern, whereas in a cave you will not be able to see an exit - this also requires a special cave diving certification.

Here are some tips for a successful lava tube dive:

Experience Level: Lava tubes can be explored by all levels of divers. Newer divers will enjoy structures like large archways and very large caverns, whereas more experienced divers will have the opportunity to enter smaller lava tubes that require precise buoyancy control.

Lighting: We always recommend carrying a dive light on any dive to peek into all of the pukas (holes) on the reef, but this is especially important when diving in lava tubes. Even the underside of archways can be dark and require light to see any of the critters!

Buoyancy: Having controlled buoyancy in any overhead environment is crucial for keeping you and the environment safe. The majority of the life is on the walls and ceiling, so be extra mindful not to touch those areas. The bottom of Hawaii’s lava tubes are generally mostly sand, sediment, and rocks.

Proper Kicking: Because the bottom of most lava tubes have a find layer of sediment on them, it is important to avoid fast arm or leg movements to avoid stirring it up and reducing visibility in the tube. We recommend bending your knees and using a frog style kick to avoid disturbing the bottom.

Pele's Respect: In Hawaiian culture, Pele is revered as the goddess of volcanoes and fire. Show respect for the environment and acknowledge the significance of the lava tubes to the island's history and culture.

Animals Inside Lava Tubes

Lava tubes are not barren caves or caverns; they host a variety of intriguing marine life. While the diversity may not rival that of the coral reef, you can expect to encounter unique creatures, such as:

Crustaceans: Lava tubes are home to a huge variety of crustaceans from large spiny lobsters to tiny clear shrimp.

Red Fish: Soldierfish and squirrelfish are nocturnal and spend their days hiding inside of dark spaces on the reef. They are all red in color to help them camouflage, recall that red is the first light wavelength to disappear underwater, making it the best color to be if you are trying to blend in!

Pufferfish: Porcupine pufferfish are frequently spotted inside lava tubes, some of them are huge with eyes the size of tennis balls staring back at you.

White-Tip Reef Sharks: Another nocturnal species, white-tip reef sharks spend their days resting under ledges or inside of lava tubes. They do not have to swim continuously to breathe, but can open and close their mouths to pull water over their gills, a movement called buccal pumping.

Sponges: The walls and ceilings of lava tubes are home to a variety of vibrant sponges. The inside of lava tubes are, surprisingly, a very colorful place!

Nudibranchs: Nudis are very common inside of lava tubes because there is abundant food (sponges, bryozoans, and hydroids) for them in these dark environments.

Black Coral: In deeper waters, generally over 60 feet, black coral trees are often seen archways where there is good water flow. These beautiful trees are considered Hawaii’s gemstone.

Big Island Dive Locations: East vs West

The Big Island of Hawaii is a diver's paradise, offering a breathtaking underwater world that rivals its stunning landscapes above the surface. When planning a scuba diving adventure on the Big Island, one of the first decisions to make is whether to explore the east side or the west side. Each side has its own unique charm and marine wonders.

The east side of the island is considered the “rainy side”, with lush, tropical rainforests and hundreds of waterfalls dotting the coastline. There are several shore diving sites in Hilo, however the majority of the year it is too rough to enter the water safely. But on a calm summer day, Hilo’s reefs are generally teeming with Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles and healthy coral reefs.

The Big Island's west side is where the vast majority of diving occurs as it is usually much calmer and more protected from wind and swell than the east side. While Kona is famous for its manta ray night dive, the west side of the Big Island is home to some of the best diving in the state. Extensive lava tubes, incredibly healthy coral reefs teeming with fish, whales in the winter, and sea turtles and spinner dolphins year round - you’re surely bound to have an unforgettable experience diving along the western coast. Kona is found along the southern half of the coastline and is where the majority of dive boats on the Big Island are located. With its steep coastline and access to deep water, you never know what will show up on your dives! The northern half of the coastline, also called the Kohala Coast, is more remote and boasts the highest coral cover in the state of Hawaii! Shore Diving vs Boat Diving

Divers on the Big Island have the option to explore the underwater world either by shore diving or boat diving. The Big Island’s coastline is mostly volcanic lava rock, so shore access is fairly limited to only a handful of sites, but they are well worth checking out! On the east side Richardson’s Beach Park offers great diving opportunities, and on the west side Mahukona, Puako, and 2-Step are great for shore diving. It is always best to talk to your local dive shop about shore diving locations to find out the best entry and exit points, navigation, and safety considerations before attempting a shore dive.

On the other hand, boat diving opens up a wider range of dive sites that are often inaccessible from the shore. It's perfect for divers looking to explore deeper waters and encounter a larger variety of marine life and habitats. Diving vs Snorkeling

Big Island of Hawaii Year-Round Diving: Seasonal Highlights

Scuba diving in Hawaii varies year-round with each season bringing a unique host of animals and different ocean conditions. The fantastic news for scuba divers is that diving in Hawaii is a year-round activity thanks to our warm, calm waters.

If you are planning a dive vacation to Hawaii, this guide will help you discover the best time to visit Hawaii’s vibrant reefs.

Summer (June to September)

The summer months are considered the high season for scuba diving in Hawaii. This period offers warm waters from 77-80° F, with temperatures peaking in September. The Hawaiian trade winds are prevalent in the summer months, so you can expect some wind, especially in the early summer. The good news is, wind often increases visibility making the underwater views spectacular! Summertime is also when we see an increase in recruitment of baby fish to the reef creating nursery areas.

Fall (October to November)

The fall season is an excellent time to visit if you prefer less crowded dive sites as this is the “off-season” for tourism. This time of year generally sees very little wind or swell, meaning the ocean is calm and inviting nearly every day. Water temperatures are still high around 80° F. Underwater creatures are abundant and active during these warm calm months.

Winter (December to March)

Wintertime brings a unique attraction – it’s humpback whale season! The migratory humpback whales spend their winters in Hawaii to mate and give birth, and return to their Alaskan feeding grounds in the summer months. Peak whale season is January and February, where whale sightings are common on surface intervals and boat rides! Water temperatures are between 74-77° F, with March being the coolest month of the year. Bear in mind that large winter swell and more frequent rain events can impact diving by reducing visibility sometimes during the winter. Fish spawning generally peaks during the cooler months so keep an eye out for “fish fireworks” if you’re diving at dawn or dusk!

Spring (April to May)

Spring is a transitional season when the waters start to warm up, generally temperatures are 76-78° F. Tourism is light so the dive sites remain uncrowded. Conditions are often calm with little to no wind or swell, making this a great time of year to explore the Big Island’s extensive lava tubes.

Weather Considerations

While Hawaii enjoys a tropical climate, it's essential to be aware of potential weather patterns like rain, strong winds, and large swells. These can affect dive conditions, so it's advisable to check weather forecasts before planning your dives. Keep in mind that hurricane season is June - November, peaking in September and October when the water is warmest, although Hawaii is not often impacted by hurricanes.

10 Things You’ll See Diving Hawaiʻi

The Hawaiian archipelago is one of the most isolated places on the planet, and diving in Hawaiʻi is truly a unique experience. Due to the remote location of the islands, nearly 25% of our marine creatures are endemic. This means that they are found nowhere else in the world!

Have you ever wondered what you’ll see when you visit Hawaiʻi’s reefs? Below are some of the common critters you will see when diving in Hawaiʻi.

Hawaiian names of species and/or families are provided where applicable.

1) Butterflyfish – kīkākapu

Hawaiʻi has 23 different species of butterflyfish. Butterflyfish are easily recognizable from their yellow, black, and white colors, although each species has its own unique pattern. Most butterflyfish also have a fake eyespot on their tail, and a dark band over their eye. This coloration is used to confuse predators and so that these small reef fish escape.

2) Hawaiian Green Sea Turtle – honu

Hawaiian green sea turtles are the only native reptile in Hawaiʻi (yep, all those geckos are introduced) and are actually the only herbivorous sea turtle. It is common to see the honu pulled up to a cleaning station on the reef; cleaning stations are established areas where surgeonfish will eat algae off of the turtle. Thanks to strong conservation efforts, the Hawaiian subpopulation of the green sea turtle has been removed from the endangered species list. The two largest threats they currently face are entanglement with fishing gear and sea level rise flooding their nests.

3) Nudibranchs

One of our favorite animals to see on the reef is the nudibranch! Nudibranchs are a type of sea slug with exquisite patterns and colors. They are carnivores, feeding on sponges, hydroids, bryzoans, corals, and even other nudibranchs! Nudibranchs bright colors are likely to warn predators that they are toxic or foul-tasting. Although they don’t produce poisons or venoms of their own, they are able to concentrate the toxins found in their food source in their bodies. Some nudibranchs that feed on stinging animals, such as hydroids, are even able to take the stinging cells from their prey and store them around their bodies (without firing them!) as a defense mechanism. All of these amazing adaptations have helped to place nudibranchs at the top of their food chain with few natural predators.

4) Coral – koʻa

There are around 50 species of shallow-water coral in Hawaiʻi, although on the Kohala coast 93% of the coral that we see is lobe coral and finger coral! Coral is the foundation of the coral reef, similar to trees in a forest. Without coral, the habitat that the rest of the reef organisms rely on is gone. Globally, 50% of coral has been lost in the last 30 years due to human impacts like pollution and climate change. While the rapid loss of coral reefs is an extremely important issue that many researchers are working to understand (including Jess!), the spatial distribution of this loss is not even. We are lucky to have some areas on the remote Kohala coast that still have high coral cover and appear to be less impacted by these stressors than other areas around the state. Diving these sites and seeing abundant healthy reef gardens gives us hope!

5) Moray Eels – puhi

Moray eels are abundant on Hawaiʻi’s reefs and are seen on most dives. Most morays are nocturnal, and we find them resting in cracks and crevices during the day. However, the whitemouth moray is often seen hunting during the day, sometimes even with other predators, such as goatfish, jacks, or groupers, in a phenomenon called “cooperative hunting.” This inter-species relationship is fascinating to watch!

6) Day Octopus – heʻe mauli

Day octopuses are the most common cephalopod seen in Hawaiʻi. Octopus are certainly one of the strangest creatures in the sea – with their blue blood (it’s copper based!), 3 hearts, and the majority of their neurons located in their arms, these animals are often likened to the aliens of the deep. Octopus have the incredible ability of changing the color, pattern, and texture of their skin with the help of special cells called chromatophores. The day octopus is active during the day, and we often see them out on the reef hunting during our dives.

7) Porcupinefish – kōkala

Similar to pufferfish, porcupinefish have the ability to inflate with water as a defense mechanism, however porcupinefish are also covered in sharp spines as an additional defense. As if this wasn’t enough to deter predators, porcupinefish are also poisonous! Porcupinefish have incredibly strong jaws and teeth that are fused together like a beak that help them to crack open the shells of they prey, including molluscs and crustaceans. They are often seen hiding under ledges or inside of lava tubes during the day.

8) White-tip Reef Sharks – Manō Lālākea

Although Hawaiʻi has 40 species of shark found in its waters, the only species you’ll likely encounter on the reef is a white-tip reef shark. These nocturnal sharks are easily identifiable by the white tips on their fins and often spotted resting under ledges or in lava tubes during the day. White-tip reef sharks have the ability to pump water over their gills by opening and closing their mouths, this is called buccal pumping. This allows the shark to rest on the seafloor, unlike other sharks that have to constantly swim to breathe.

9) Wrasses – hīnālea

Wrasses are the largest fish family in Hawaiʻi with 43 different species, 18 of which are endemic! These brightly colored and intricately patterned cigar shaped fish have interesting life-cycles. Most wrasses are born as female, and as they mature they join a harem that includes several females and one male. The male guards his territory and spawns individually with each of the females in his harem. When the male dies, the most dominant female of the group changes sex and becomes the new male. Each species of wrasse typically has different colors during each of these phases, juvenile, female, and male.

10) Trumpetfish – nūnū

Trumpetfish are long fish with a horse-like face and are often gray-brown or yellow colored. These reef predators will hide among similarly colored fish, for example, dark trumpets will hide among a school of dark surgeonfish, while yellow ones will join a school of millitseed butterflyfish. They do this to get close to their prey. Once they are within striking distance, the trumpetfish will open its mouth extremely fast and suck in a prey that is the same diameter as their body!

11) Bonus! Endemic species

These are some of the endemic species (found only in Hawaiʻi) that we often see while diving. Hawaiʻi has the highest percent of marine endemic creatures in the world, so much of what you are seeing on our dives is found no where else in the world!

Voodoo Gas – Enriched Air Nitrox

Enriched Air Nitrox, what is it and what are its benefits?

When Enriched Air Nitrox was first introduced to divers, they were skeptical of its benefits, and the gas blend was coined “voodoo gas” for some time. However, over the years divers have realized time and time again the benefits of diving on nitrox, and now it is standardly used for recreational, technical and commercial diving.

So, what is Nitrox?

Nitrox is any blend of breathing gas that has a higher percentage of oxygen. Normal air contains (approximately) 21% oxygen and 79% nitrogen, while common blends of nitrox are 32% oxygen/68% nitrogen and 36% oxygen/64% nitrogen. But why would you want to breathe higher levels of oxygen while diving?

Because nitrox lets you stay down longer.

Let’s return to our dive tables to see why that is:

Max Allowed Time (No-Decompression Limit)

As you can see, diving on nitrox gives you significantly more bottom time than diving on air! This is because you are loading less nitrogen into your body (due to the lower nitrogen percentage in nitrox gas) and therefore reducing your risk of decompression sickness. Since you are loading less nitrogen, you can stay down longer before reaching the no-decompression limit. One common misconception with nitrox is that it provides you with more air, which is untrue. There is the same amount of air in the tank, but the allowed dive time increases.

Nitrox doesn’t come without its own set of risks. Because you are breathing a higher percentage of oxygen, there is a risk of oxygen toxicity at deeper depths. Another common misconception with nitrox is that it lets you go deeper, however this is not the case.

Nitrox limits your maximum allowed depth on a dive.

If you look back at the maximum allowed time table above, you’ll notice N/A on Nitrox 36% at 100 feet. This is because that is deeper than the maximum allowed depth on that blend.

Diving on nitrox is beneficial in most diving scenarios, below are the pros and cons:

Pros

longer bottom time
less risk of decompression sickness
may allow you to shorten surface intervals between dives (compared to diving on air)
anecdotally, many divers claim it reduces post-dive fatigue

Cons

reduces maximum allowed depth
risk of oxygen toxicity if you violate depth limit
often more expensive than diving on air

Wondering where the name “Liquid Cosmos Divers” came from?

When deciding what we wanted to name the business, we knew we wanted to capture that feeling of awe that we get while exploring the ocean.

We’ve always said that scuba diving is the closest you’ll get to visiting outer-space here on Earth. When you’re diving, you are going into an unknown and strange environment. You must carry your life support with you, your body can only withstand a certain amount of pressure, many of the animals you encounter are ‘alien-like,’ and the majority of the ocean is still unexplored!

In that regard, we are exploring our planet’s last frontier.

Mike and Jess have always been fascinated by outer-space (Mike was even selected as a candidate for a Mars-One colonization program, but that’s a story for another time). We are equally as fascinated by our place in this universe, and how the weird and wonderful creatures we encounter in the ocean have evolved such an array of amazing adaptations.

“Liquid Cosmos Divers” is a merging of our love of outer-space and the ocean. We are captivated by the possibilities these two places offer for discovery and adventure.
