How We Prioritize Safety on Every Dive at Liquid Cosmos Divers

June 9, 2026

Key Takeaways

  • Safety planning starts before anyone gets in the water, with a real conversation about each diver's experience, comfort, and goals.
  • Our crew brings genuine emergency background, including nearly two decades of water rescue and years of emergency medical work.
  • We choose dive sites daily based on actual ocean conditions, never forcing a site to fit a fixed schedule.
  • Small groups mean every diver gets close attention and faster help if something goes wrong.
  • The boat carries emergency oxygen, an AED, and a fully stocked first aid kit, and our crew trains regularly to use all of it.

Scuba diving is an incredible way to explore the ocean, but it’s also an activity that demands preparation, awareness, and respect for the environment. At Liquid Cosmos Divers, safety isn’t a checklist we run through at the dock. It’s a mindset that shapes every decision we make, from how we plan our dives to how we guide each diver underwater.

Here’s how we prioritize safety on every dive while still delivering meaningful, personalized ocean experiences on the Big Island of HawaiÊ»i.

We Start by Getting to Know Our Divers

Safety begins long before anyone enters the water. We take the time to get to know each diver, their certification level, recent dive experience, comfort in the water, goals for the dive, and any concerns they may have.

This personal approach lets us anticipate individual needs, provide the right support underwater, and adjust the dive plan as conditions change. By understanding our divers as individuals, we create an experience that is not only more enjoyable, but also significantly safer.

A Highly Trained, Experienced Crew You Can Trust

Our crew brings experience well beyond what you'll find with the average dive operator. Jess, one of the owners and our lead guide, has been a lifeguard since the age of 14 and has worked in water rescue for nearly 20 years. That background means strong situational awareness, calm decision making, and deep familiarity with emergency response in ocean environments.

Mike, the other owner and our captain, spent many years as an emergency veterinary technician. His patients may not have been human, but the role required extensive first aid training, emergency triage skills, and the ability to stay composed when the pressure was high.

Together, we regularly run crew training drills, practice emergency scenarios, and keep up with continuing education and updated certifications. This ongoing training means we're always prepared, not just reacting but actively preventing problems before they arise.

Local Knowledge of Our Coastline and Conditions

The ocean changes daily, and no two dive days are the same. Because we know the Kohala Coast and the waters around Kawaihae Harbor intimately, we choose dive sites based on the real conditions in front of us, not a fixed schedule. We look at swell, currents, and visibility, we watch the weather patterns, and we factor in each diver's experience level and comfort.

We never force a dive site that doesn't match the day's conditions or our divers' abilities. Choosing the right site is one of the most important safety decisions we make.

Small Groups for Maximum Attention

We intentionally keep our dive groups small. That lets us closely monitor each diver, keep communication clear underwater, and provide faster assistance if anyone needs it. Smaller groups don't just improve safety, they also make the whole dive calmer, more personal, and more enjoyable.

Equipment That Is Carefully Maintained and Serviced

Reliable equipment is essential for safe diving. All of our gear is professionally maintained, regularly inspected and serviced, and retired the moment it no longer meets our standards. That discipline sharply reduces the chance of an equipment malfunction and helps every diver enter the water with confidence.

Clear, Thorough Safety Briefings

Before every dive, we run a detailed safety briefing so everyone is on the same page before we get in the water. It covers:

  • Entry and exit procedures
  • The dive plan and depth limits
  • Hand signals and communication
  • Emergency procedures

We encourage questions and make sure everything is clear. No one should ever feel rushed or uncertain.

Emergency Equipment Readily Accessible

We focus on prevention first, but we are always prepared. Our boat carries:

  • Emergency oxygen
  • An AED
  • A fully stocked first aid kit

Every piece of safety equipment is easy to reach, and our crew is trained to use it quickly and effectively if the moment ever calls for it.

Safety as Part of a Meaningful Ocean Experience

At Liquid Cosmos Divers, safety and adventure are not opposites, they go hand in hand. When divers feel supported, informed, and cared for, they can relax, connect with the ocean, and truly enjoy the experience.

Our goal isn't just to take you diving. It's to create a safe, respectful, and enriching way to explore Hawaiʻi's underwater world, so the only thing you have to think about once you're under is the water itself.
